The statewide military culture training initiative is designed to increase understanding of the military population through education and training, strengthen the overall service structure in NH across military and civilian providers, and improve access to and quality of care for Veterans, Service Members, and their Families.

Course Description:

There is a deficit in identifying, understanding, and managing the impact of military socialization, PTSD, and TBI in general medical practice. This half-day presentation assists the practitioner in understanding and recognizing potential barriers to effective medical interventions in this population. The trainings are designed to educate physicians to have a better understanding regarding military culture, reintegration into civilian life, the impact of PTSD and TBI, and how this may present in general medical practice among Veterans, Service Members, and their Families. In addition, physicians will be educated on treatment and interviewing principles for individuals with military-related PTSD and TBI.

Presenters:

Dr. Daniel Potenza, MD

Dr. Potenza is an American Psychiatric Association Gold Award winner for innovative programming, an American Medical Association Honoree for work with veterans at the Manchester VA, and has lectured nationally on topics related to personality functioning, personality disorders and programming for those with mental illness. He has been recognized by The National Alliance on Mental Illness on several occasions with their Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. He is currently a fellow of The American Psychiatric Association and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School. He currently serves as the psychiatric medical director of the New Hampshire Department of Corrections.

Dr. Nicole Sawyer, PsyD

Dr. Sawyer is a clinical psychologist in Exeter, NH and a frequent presenter on such topics as veteran mental health care and the impact of military culture on health care access and engagement. She has been in private practice since 2009 and works primarily with survivors of trauma, specifically combat veterans, law enforcement, adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and survivors of domestic violence. In addition to private practice, Dr. Sawyer has worked in several clinical settings, including maximum security prison, community mental health, and VA Medical Center. In 2012 she was invited to testify before Congress in Washington DC regarding the crises in the VA mental health system. She has twice been an expert guest on The Exchange, a popular NH Public Radio show where she discussed such topics as the challenges facing veterans and service members in NH, and the impact that stress has on our daily lives. She is a vice-chair of the NH Legislative Commission on PTSD & TBI and co-chair of that commission’s Military Education and Awareness subcommittee.

This training is hosted by the New Hampshire Hospital Association and delivered by Dare Mighty Things (DMT). With its roots in Portsmouth, NH, DMT has been a trusted partner of government agencies, nonprofits, and foundations for over 24 years. On a national scale, DMT has been instrumental in providing training for Service Providers, Veterans, Service Members, and their Families.
